Happy Halloween to all the great SkyChiefs’ fans.  As a special treat we unveil a list of the Top 10 Syracuse players that have a name related to a costume you may see at your door tonight.  Rankings are based on their contribution to baseball in Syracuse.

10. Mike “Nunn”- The 1st round pick of the Angels in the 1967 draft appeared in less than 10 games for the 1972 Chiefs.

9. Steve “Barber” – The left-handed flamethrower was a two-time American League All-Star with the Orioles (’63 and ’66) pitched in 7 games for the Syracuse Chiefs in 1968. 

8. Brandon “Lyon”- Current Arizona Diamondback reliever pitched for the SkyChiefs in 2001 and 2002 and was a combined 9-12.

7. “Doc” Estes – First-baseman hit .276 with 4 HR and 32 RBI for the 1987 Chiefs.

6. Pedro “Swann” – Left-handed hitting outfielder hit .277 with 14 HR and 62 RBI for the 2002 SkyChiefs.

5. “Goose” Gozzo – Went 5-1 for the 1989 team that lost to Richmond in the I.L. semifinals.  In 1990 he led the team with seven saves.

4. “Bert” Cueto and “Ernie” Whitt – Cueto was 4-8 for the ’61 Chiefs.  Current Blue Jays Bench Coach Whitt hit a combined 19 HR and 96 RBI for the Chiefs in ’78 and ’79.

3. “Jayson” Werth – He began is career with a mask, it didn’t glow in the dark though, before being converted to an outfielder.  In 2002 Werth hit 18 HR and drove home 82 RBI and also stole 24 bases.  In 2003 he hit 9 HR and also hit three doubles in a game tying the franchise record.   A scary thought, the SkyChiefs have had at least one Jason (or Jayson) on every team during the 21st century.  2000- Jason Bell; 2001- Bell and Jason Dickson; 2002- Jayson Werth; 2003- Werth and Jason Arnold; 2004- Arnold, Jason Kershner, Jason Frasor; 2005- Arnold, Jason Alfaro; 2006- Frasor and Jason Phillips.

2. “Otto” Velez– Velez who shares the same first name as SU’s popular mascot was named I.L Rookie-of-the-Year in 1973 after hitting 29 HR and 98 RBI and ranks 10th in franchise history with 52 total.

1. Howard “Fox” – Went 19-9 with a 2.68 ERA including 21 complete games for the 1947 Governor’s Cup Championship team.
