More From Mandalay

An interesting story in Sunday’s NY Post commenting on Mandalay Entertainment Group (the group who recently took control of the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Red Barons) taking over the Staten Island Yankees of the short-season NY-Penn League.

Joseph Barracato wrote:

After five-consecutive losing seasons at the box office, the Staten Island Yankees have reeled in the biggest free agent they could find.

Mandalay Entertainment Group, the Hollywood film company which also runs a sports marketing operation, has been hired to promote the 7,500-seat waterfront stadium.

The move, to be announced this Thursday, could be a home run for the city.

While the Brooklyn Cyclones, playing before sell out crowds, have paid the city at least $2.5 million in rent over the past five years, the minor league Yanks have paid nothing.

Each team has an attendance clause that bases rent upon the number of fannies in the stands. The S.I. Yanks, which tried to market the team themselves, couldn’t even muster the minimum number of tickets sold in each of the past five seasons – thus paid nothing in rent.

Then-mayor Rudy Giuliani approved the publicly-financed $80 million stadiums.

Guber plans to target the business world of lower Manhattan – an untapped area, The Post has learned. Mandalay is banking that the quick commute on the S.I. Ferry will add to the lure of the ballpark’s Party Decks and Suites.
