X MAN RETURNS

Former Chiefs pitcher Xavier Hernandez will return to the International League as the pitching coach for the Durham Bulls.  The Bulls will be in town May 19th thru the 22nd.  Hernandez pitched for the Chiefs during the 1989 season when the club finished with an 83-62 record and a Eastern Division Title.  He started that season in Knoxville, but was called up in late April and went on to make 9-starts for the Chiefs compiling a 4-3 record and a 2.28 ERA.  He tossed a one-hit 9-inning shutout against Toledo in his first start at then MacArthus Stadium.  Hernandez was called up to Toronto in June and spent two months with the Blue Jays before returning to Syracuse for 6-more starts in August and finished with a 5-6 record and a 3.57 ERA in 15-starts.

Xavier went on to spend 10-years in the major leagues with Toronto, Houston, Yankees, Cincinnati, and Texas.  He appeared in 463 major league games, with his best season coming in 1992 with Houston when he went 9-1 with a 2.11 ERA.

Hernandez was part of a group on young Blue Jays pitchers that season that included Alex Sanchez, Steve Cummings, Willie Blair, Jeff Musselman, and Todd Stottlemyre.
