July 10th v. Lehigh Valley

The Chiefs open a four-game set with the IronPigs tonight at Alliance Bank Stadium. If you can’t make it to the ballpark, you can watch the game on Time Warner 26 or listen on NOVA 105.1 FM. Full game notes are available here. Here’s a rundown on the starting pitchers:

Chiefs: Davis Romero

This Season: Romero pitched for the first time since 2006 April 6th after missing all of 2007 with a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder. He fired three shutout innings before reaching his pitch count in 1st start….struck out season high six and scattered two hits in four shutout innings May 2nd against Pawtucket…lost May 8th allowing four home runs and seven runs total in 2.1 innings against Buffalo…won for the first time by going season high five innings and allowing three hits and one run May 13th at Charlotte…pitched two innings in Cooperstown May 18th before game stopped due to rain (2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K); longest start of the year June 20th v. Richmond in win at home (7 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K)…lost in last start at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, allowing seven hits and three runs over 4.1 innings

Last Season: Romero started the 2006 year at AA New Hampshire, garnering a 6-5 record and 2.93 ERA in 12 starts for the Fisher Cats. The work earned him a promotion in mid-June to the Chiefs where he pitched primarily out of the bullpen.

Career Notes: Romero spent about half the 2006 season with the Chiefs.. Is the original 4th starter in the Chiefs rotation….Signed as a free agent from Panama at the age of 16 in July of 1999; made pro debut the following season in the Dominican League where he pitched for two years…3rd in Pioneer league in K’s in ’02 with 76 in only 50.1 IP even though he was primarily a reliever for Medicine Hat…led the New York-Penn league in games in ’03 with 30 for Auburn…has season ERA under 3.00 in 4 of 8 professional years…has had more strikeouts than Innings pitched in every year except 2006 (116K in 134 IP).

IronPigs: Travis Blackley


This Season: The IronPigs lefthander makes his 16th start…won five days ago at Pawtucket, scattering five hits and two runs over seven innings…lost in lone start against the Chiefs this year April 22nd, didn’t get out of the first inning (0.2 IP, 2 H, 6 R, 4 BB, 0 K)

Last Season: Spent most of the year with AAA Fresno (Giants) in the starting rotation and totaled a 10-8 record averaging less than one hit allowed per inning…made two starts in late September for the Giants with no record and 7.27 ERA in 8.2 innings pitched.

Career Notes: owns 1-3 major league record in eight starts…has made 151 career starts (149 starts) with 59-44 career record in the minor leagues…is pitching with a team in the Eastern time zone for the first time (teams in WA, CA, TX)
