Right-handed pitcher Yunesky Maya, who was signed as a free agent late last summer, was named the Domincan Winter League Pitcher of the Year this week.

Maya, 27, a Cuban defector, joined the Nationals organization in June and made five minor league starts (2 at AAA-Syracuse, 1-1 0.82 ERA) before joining the Nationals in September where he made five more starts at the major league level, going 0-3 with a 5.88 ERA.

In the Dominican he was 4-2 with a 1.32 ERA in 8 starts for Escogido, recording 42 strikeouts in 41 innings earning him the League’s top pitching honors.

In addition, Nationals outfielder Eury Perez was named the League’s Rookie of the Year after he batted .345 with 21 stolen bases in 38 games.

Perez, 20, spent all of 2010 at Hagerstown (low A), where he batted .299 with 3 HR 42 RBI and 64 stolen bases.
