Card Notes – July 24th

Syracuse takes on Louisville tonight at 7:00 PM. Here’s how the Chiefs stack up

-Caleb Clay hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a game this year.

-Zach Walter, Corey Brown and Tyler Moore are all hitting over .400 in their last five games with a combined 21 hits, 15 runs and 15 RBIs.

-Chris Rahl is sixth in the league in batting average at .311.

Ryan Tatusko – P

-Chris Rahl singled and walked yesterday, upping his current hit streak to a team-high nine games. Over the course of that span, Rahl’s gone 17 for 34 (.500) with two walks and a .794 slugging percentage.

-Corey Brown tripled, walked, doubled and reached on an error in yesterday’s win. Brown’s now ended up on base in eight consecutive trips to the plate, going 6 for 7 during that span.

-Today’s SP, Ryan Tatusko, has dominated opposing hitters his last two starts. Tatusko’s allowed just two runs over his last 14 innings – both of which scored as inherited runners against Cole Kimball in Tatusko’s last start.

Some news and notes…

1. Tanner Roark enters today’s game with a streak of 16 consecutive scoreless innings. Since May 6 – a span of 19 games and 42.2 innings- Roark has allowed just two earned runs, both of which came on an Argenis Diaz double June 11th vs. Pawtucket. He’s sported a 0.42 ERA over that time span.

2. The International League announced its 2013 All-Star team yesterday, with Zach Walters being elected for the Chiefs. The Syracuse shortstop is three off the International League lead with 40 extra-base hits this season.

3. Today marks the Chiefs’ fifth doubleheader in 12 days. Syracuse will play a sixth twin bill in 15 days at Buffalo on Sunday. The Chiefs are currently 5-7 in official double-header games this season.

Some news and notes…

1. Today’s Rendon’s third Syracuse game – and he’s started all three at second base, where he started just five times with Harrisburg.

2. Chris Marrero’s hitting fifth for just the second time this season. The other? April 9th at Buffalo.

3. Eury Perez is back in the leadoff spot after a leadoff home run – the first such homer of his career – in yesterday’s game.

4. Mike Costanzo gets the start at DH. He’s 8 for 45 (.178) as the DH this year, but does have two home runs.

5. Danny Rosenbaum’s won both of his starts after a loss this season, allowing one earned run in 14 innings combined over those games.

1. Eury Perez looks to extend his hitting streak to 15 games. He holds the franchise record with a 23-game hit streak (over two seasons). Perez also has owned hit streaks of 14 and 19 in his Syracuse tenure. 82.4% of his Syracuse games to date have fallen within one of those three hit streaks.

2. Zach Walters hit his 10th home run last night, tying Chris Marrero for the Syracuse lead. That homer made the Chiefs just one of two International League teams with a pair of 10-homer batters this season, along with Buffalo (Mauro Gomez and Luis Jiminez).

3. Chris Rahl is back in the starting lineup after his 17-game hit streak came to an end during a pinch-hit appearance last night.

1. Zach Walters gets a rare day off, having played in 41 of the Chiefs’ first 43 games. He’s replaced at shortstop by Brian Bocock.

2. Today’s the 575th professional game for Bocock at shortstop – and his first as a Chief. That’s 502 more games than at his second-most-frequent position, second base (73).

3. Corey Brown’s now played center field in all five games since his return from the Disabled List.

4. After Chris Rahl in the leadoff spot, the Chiefs alternate left-handed batters and right-handers for every other batter, from Jeff Kobernus on.

5. Mud Hens starter Shawn Hill’s been a teammate of three Chiefs in today’s lineup: Bocock (2012 Las Vegas, Toronto’s AAA team), Jeroloman (2010 Las Vegas), and, for a grand total of three starts, Chris Marrero (2007-08 Potomac Nationals).

Some notes of, well, note:

1. Brian Bocock’s the #9 hitter today in his Syracuse debut. He’s a former San Francisco Giant (2008) and Philadelphia Phillie (2010).

2. Two Chiefs are working on hitting streaks of a week or more: leadoff hitter Chris Rahl (nine games) and cleanup hitter Chris Marrero (seven).

3. Jeff Kobernus bats second for the 36th time this season. That’s the most of any Chiefs player in one position. (Marrero’s second with 35 games in the cleanup spot.)

4. Carlos Rivero’s starting at first base for the first time this season.

5. Kris Watts has been a Chief for eight games. He’s started seven of them.
