In this week’s Alumni Report we take a look at former Syracuse players in the Triple-A Mexican League.  The regular season ended on July 31st and the playoffs are currently underway.

Acereros del Norte

Nerio Rodriguez (’99) tied with Jose Lima for the Mexican League lead with 13 wins and finished 4th in the league with 93 strikeouts and 146.1 innings pitched.  He finished the regular season 13-3 with a 2.64 ERA in 22 starts.

Potros de Tijuana

Anton French (’04-’05) appeared in 14 games for the Potros hitting .175 with 1 HR, 2 RBI and 5 SB.

Rieleros de Aguascalientes

Yan_1 42 year old Julian Yan (’93-’94) finished the regular season 2nd in the league with 30 HR, tied for 3rd with 55 extra base hits and fourth with 90 RBI.  He hit .291 in 106 games with 25 doubles and just for good measure he stole 8 bases.

Rojos del Aguila de Veracruz

Willis Otanez (’00) finished 8th in the league with a .362 batting average while hitting 21 HR and driving home 89 in 100 games.


The Independent Atlantic League began play last week and several former Syracuse players are currently on the rosters of the eight teams in the league.

Singleton_1 OF Justin Singleton (’05-’06) has played in 10 games for the Camden Riversharks and is hitting .279 with 2 HR and 7 RBI.

P Tim Cain (’97) has appeared in 3 games for the Long Island Ducks and is 0-0 with a 4.15 ERA.

P Kevin Tolar (’05) has appeared in 5 games for the Ducks and is 0-1 with a 8.10 ERA.

P Jeff Tam (’03) has appeared in one game for the Road Warriors and is 0-0 with a 0.00.

OF Anton French has appeared in 7 games for the Somerset Patriots and is hitting .308 with 1 HR and 2 RBI.

IF Luis Lopez (’98-’01) has appeared in 6 games for the York Revolution and is hitting .286 with 1 HR and 3 RBI.

For those of you not familiar with Independent League baseball, the teams are not affiliated with a Major League team.  Many players in the league get signed by affiliated teams throughout the season and sent to Double or Triple-A. After appearing in just one game for Somerset SkyChiefs OF Noah Hall had his contract purchased by the New York Yankees and is now playing for Double-A Trenton.
