LOUISVILLE SERIES

The Chiefs 10-game homestand begins tonight with a four game set versus the Louisville Bats, who come to town with a record of 9-10.

Here is a look at who to watch for on the Louisville team.

PITCHING

Bailey_homer1The Reds #1 Prospect Homer Bailey comes to Syracuse with a 1-1 record and 1.69 ERA in four starts.  Bailey is considered one of the next great Pitchers-in-the-making along with the Yankees Phil Hughes, who we just had a chance to watch in Syracuse last week.  Left-hander Phil Dumatrait leads the IL with 4 wins and a 0.38 ERA in four starts.

Former SkyChiefs’ pitcher Jason Kershner is 1-1 with a 0.87 ERA in 10 appearances out of the bullpen.

POSITION PLAYERS

Votto_joey1 Reds #3 prospect Joey Votto is off to a slow start hitting just .215 with 2 HR and 11 RBI after connecting for 22 HR’s at AA Chattanooga last season.

Red Sox fans will get a chance to see infielder Mark Bellhorn who is hitting .283 with 2 HR and 12 RBI.  Yankee fans will be disappointed to see that OF BellhornBubba Crosby is currently on the DL.  Infielder Earl Snyder, an IL veteran, is off to a slow start hitting .120 with 0 HR and just 3 RBI but always hits well at Alliance Bank Stadium.

Aaron Herr, son of former Major Leaguer Tommy Herr, is second on the Louisville team with a .303 average and leads the team with 8 doubles.

Former SkyChiefs’ OF Dewayne Wise is off to a nice start hitting .308 with 3 triples, 3 HR and 5 RBI.  He is joined in the Louisville outfield by Tyrell Godwin, who reached AA with the Blue Jays before being selected in the 2006 Rule V Draft.

CORY LIDLE

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Cory Lidle today.  Cory was the starting and winning pitcher in the first ever game at P&C Stadium on April 3, 1997 for Norfolk.  He later pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2003 winning 12-games.  He also made one appearance with the SkyChiefs that season on August 20th in Pawtucket.  He started and pitched four shutout innings in a game the Red Sox won in the bottom of the ninth when Earl Snyder hit a grand slam home run off Kevin Frederick.  Lidle left the Blue Jays organization as a free agent in 2004 and pitched for Cincinnati, Philadelphia and the New York Yankees.

I’m sure Chiefs fans who heard the news on Lidle yesterday remember when another former Chiefs player Thurman Munson also tragically died in a plane crash in August 1979.
