GEORGE SISLER 1917-2006

The Syracuse Chiefs and the International League lost a great friend on New Years Eve as longtime league Executive George Sisler passed away at the age of 89.  The son of Hall of Famer George Sisler Sr. and brother of major league players **** and Dave Sisler – George left his mark on Minor League baseball as one of the greatest in the game.

First as General Manager of the Rochester Red Wings were he spent 10 years from 1956-66.  He established Rochester as a model franchise that kept the International League going during those tough years.  And then as the I.L.’s President from 1966-1976 and steering the league through franchise shifts that would lead to a strong economic base that would propel the league into the 80′s.  He would then finish his career in Columbus from 1977-89 as that franchise returned to the I.L. and set a benchmark for everyone in baseball to strive for.

George Sisler graduated from Colgate in 1939 and was a Captain in the United States Army and served in World War II and the Korean War.  He has been inducted into the Rochester and Columbus Hall of Fame and was a four-time I.L. Executive of the Year.

Mr. Sisler has been part of the International League for 52 of it’s 124 year history and will be sorely missed.
