Nats cuts

More on this later, but here’s a list of players sent to AAA camp this morning (with last year’s team in parentheses):

Pitchers
Luis Atilano (Syracuse/Washington)
Adam Carr (Harrisburg/Syracuse)
J.D. Martin (Syracuse/Washington)
Garrett Mock (Syracuse/Washington)
Josh Wilkie (Syracuse)
Catchers
Carlos Maldonado (Syracuse/Washington)
Jhonatan Solano (Harrisburg)
Infielders
Michael Aubrey (Norfolk)
Kevin Barker (Veracruz)
Oufielders
Jeff Frazier (Toledo/Detroit)
Jonathan Van Every (Indianapolis/Boston)
-Atilano’s gotten buried by the additions to the Nats rotation during the last year (Maya to the U.S., Zimmermann back from injury).  He made 16 starts last year in Washington but posted a 5.15 ERA.  Same goes for J.D. Martin
-Aubrey’s another case of “If you can’t beat him, sign him.”  4 homers and 12 RBI in a four-day span against the Chiefs in July last year caught Syracuse’s attention (and likely the Nats).
-Frazier’s an IL All-Star who had 25 of his 77 career homers last season in Toledo.  He’s been playing in pro ball since ’04 and absolutely had a stunning year last year.  Will be an asset for the Chiefs.
Nats and Astros tonight @ 6 in Viera.  Stay tuned to the blog for more…..Kevin and I will be going to the ballpark shortly.

Monday in Viera

High of 76 today.  Snow unlikely.

A few notes about today’s starting lineups for the Nats and Astros.
-Former Chief Yunesky Maya is pitching for the Nats…..Jim Riggleman was impressed with him last time out.  Found his fastball again in winter ball.  One of maybe five guys who could be either a starter with the Nats or a starter in Syracuse.
–Roger Bernadina leading off.  He’s in a mess of outfielders with Rick Ankiel, Michael Morse and a bunch of others….
-….including Jeff Frazier, an IL All-Star last year who’s seemingly made a positive impression on the Nats so far this summer.
-The Nats have chosen to use the DH today, despite in being an NL game vs Houston.  We’ve seen Yunesky Maya bat once.  That’s likely enough.
-On the subject of the Astros, their starting third baseman is Chris Johnson, the son of former PawSox manager Ron Johnson.  Here’s a nice story on RJ from NESN:

NATS BRINGS BACK OUTFIELDER BUCK COATS

The Washington Nationals signed outfielder Buck Coats to a minor league deal and assigned him to AAA-Syracuse where he played in 2008 as a member of the Chiefs.

Coats, 28, began the 2010 season at AAA-Omaha (Royals) before being traded to the Chicago White Sox in April.  He played 18-games at AA-Birmingham before joining AAA-Charlotte for the remainder of the season (80 games) in May.  Combined he batted .296 with 7 HR 48 RBI for the Knights.

The left-handed hitting Coats batted .302 with Las Vegas (Blue Jays) in 2009 and .286 with the Chiefs in 2008.

The Nationals potential AAA outfielders include Coats, Jeff Frazier, Corey Brown, Jonathan Van Every, Boomer Whiting, Jesus Valdez and could include Justin Maxwell who is currently on the major league roster.

NATS ADD AUBREY, VAN EVERY AND OTHERS

The Washington Nationals added first baseman Mike Aubrey outfielder Johathan Van Every and six other players to their AAA-Syracuse roster.

Aubrey, 28, was originally drafted in the first round by the Cleveland Indians in 2003 and was later traded to the Orioles organization in 2008.  Last season in Norfolk he had 25 doubles, 22 home runs and 68 RBI in 102 games for the Tides.

Van Every, 31, another Indians draft selection in 2001 moved to the Red Sox organization in 2008.  He had back to back 20 home run season in 2004 & 2005 at A-Kinston and AA-Akron before splitting the next two seasons 2006 & 2007 between AAA-Buffalo and AA-Akron.

He spent 2008 with Pawtucket and batted .263 with 26 HR and 70 RBI.  He would play for Boston in each of the next three years 2008-2010 as well.  Last season with Indianapolis he batted .214 with 10 HR and 29 RBI in 60 games.  Van Every is an outstanding centerfielder.

The Nats also re-signed infielder Brian Bixler who joined the Chiefs in August last season and righthanded pitchers Joe Bisenius and Ryan Mattheus.

Bisenius, 28 joined the Chiefs in July and was effective out of the bullpen.  He would later get called up to Washington in September.

Mattheus, 27, came over to the Nationals in the Nick Johnson deal in 2009 and was out much of the 2010 season with an arm injury.  He pitched late in the season for the Nationals Gulf Coast League affiliate.

In addition, the Nationals officially announced the signing of outfielder Jeff Frazier and righthanded pitcher Tim Wood.

NATS INK FRAZIER, MCCONNELL TO FREE AGENT DEALS

The Washington Nationals have signed outfielder Jeff Frazier and infielder Chris McConnell to minor league deals and assigned them to the Syracuse-AAA roster.

Frazier, 28, has spent the past two years playing for the Toledo Mud Hens (Tigers) in the International League.  Last season he was named to the I.L. All Star team when he batted .256 with 25 home runs and 73 RBI.  He also scored 72 runs and clubbed 34 doubles.  His 61 extra base hits led the I.L. in 2010.

The New Jersey resident attended Rutgers and was the Detroit Tigers 4th round selection in the 2004 June draft.

McConnell, 25, played last season with Northwest Arkansas (Royals) in the Texas League.  He batted .231 with 3 home runs and 39 RBI.  Used primarily as a short stop throughout his career he fielded .973 in 122 games last season with Arkansas – tops in the league.

The Pennsylvania native was also selected in the 2004 June draft by the Kansas City Royals  out of high school.

Frazier and McConnell join right handed pitcher Tim Wood as off-season free agent pick-ups by the Washington Nationals.
